Kaikoura Club Run Report
Sunday 14th March 2010
Words & Pictures by Stephen Clarke
Well what a day for a drive! It was heading for the hottest day so far for March and Christchurch was at 18 deg and no wind at 9.30am when Marg & I headed out to meet up with any other SLR club members that would show up for the trip. The plan was to head to Kaikoura via the inland scenic route for lunch at Donegal House where we would meet up with other SLR club members, Paul & Rosemary from Picton and Ian & Kattie from Blenheim.
By 10am only four other SLR club members had shown up and all were in Lotus 7 type cars. We headed off in 20deg weather and were on our way and by the time we hit Waiau it was hitting 25 deg. A quick stop to remove the polar fleeces and we were gone again and into the great road that is the inland Kaikoura road. This road consists of some of the tightest blind corners I have come across with many 25km sign posted corners becoming tighter as you got into them. There were many elevation changes too and as each km of the 80kms to Kaikoura passed under us it just got better and better with lots of sweeping corners & fast short straights before another set of corners would come upon us.
