Slot Car Evening (October 2008)

Words & Pictures by S. J. Perry

A great night out was had by all with a recent invitation to participate in a Slot Car racing evening put on by a local club based in Sockburn. The impressive 4-lane track can be set up to be completely computer controlled with regards to allocation of places and lap timing.

Around 20-25 people turned up and once the 'how to's' were gotten out of the way, the 'Red Mist' descended and no prisoners were taken in enduring battles between groups of 4 would-be World Champions in various sessions.

More than a few spills (err....off track excursions) were had by most people until they got the hang of the tight hairpin bends and other peculiarities of the track. Your scribe eventually managed fastest lap in his group (after finally working out which car he was in-charge of!) but Kit Peverill took overall honours for putting in more laps in that round. I've always said - 'Quality not Quantity' - but it fell on deaf ears when the numbers were totted up.

Of course we were all put to shame when our own SLR club member, Peter Allen, demonstrated true skill using a vastly superior car taking in several flying laps of the circuit. Talk about hanging it out on the corners! Peter has been a member of the Slot Car club for a number of years and his experience sure shone through.

A BIG thank you to Kerry Radford and Peter Allen for setting up a truly exciting evening. They have extended an invitation to SLR Club Members to come along on regular Tuesday evening Slot Car club evenings. Slot Cars can be hired on the evening for a very modest sum and the ultimate aim is to attract new members to their club (and help pay the rent!).

IMPORTANT: Please contact Peter first as per a recent club email so that numbers attending can be controlled.
